James R. Harrigan, dean of students, answers the questions that the students ask about the new name of the university. Dr. James explains the reasons behind changing the name. According to an e-mail that Harrigan sends out, AUI, Sulaimnai, will be the official documents of the university.
Read the exact words of the e-mail below….

Dear Students,

Over the past day a number of rumors have been circulating about the imminent change of the AUI-S name.  I have watched the many Facebook exchanges with interest, and have answered a number of questions as they have been asked.  Still, there are clearly too many questions to answer one at a time, so this is what is going on:

In the face of the danger  of illicit use  of the  name  American University of Iraq by institutions of uncertain quality adopting it and possibly adding the name of another town, which would damage our reputation and endanger the prestige  of our institution, we have sought to secure ownership of that name and of the initials AUI, which is reflected in the new email addresses.  This is also reflected by dropping the hyphen, i.e. the  dash “-“ , that makes it seem as though we were not THE American University of Iraq, so that our new logo, letterhead and the official documents will now read  AUI, Sulaimani, thus proclaiming our attachment to our host city.

The administration will be happy to address student concerns in a polite and orderly way next week when people have had more time to think about this.

Please be aware that protests are not appropriate until all of the facts have been disseminated and considered.  Protests which take the form of class boycotts will not be tolerated.  Regular academic life will go on, and we will discuss this in a rational way in due course.

Best wishes,

James R. Harrigan
Dean of Students
